Nonprofits

For the well-being of society: Nonprofits adapt

Nonprofit organizations play a key role in the well-being of humans worldwide. They continue to address challenges but those challenges are multiplying in the face of shrinking government dollars, limited expertise in brand awareness and marketing, and a shrinking philanthropic pool. Efforts are being made to introduce appropriate business practices, encourage similar or tangential organizations to merge or combine services, and promote community service in both public and private schools in order to capture volunteerism and philanthropy as a way of life.

Building Consensus through Collaboration

Board Facilitation for Change

Collaborations among nonprofits can result in a range of outcomes. However, exploring the potential of such efforts and opening dialog among leaders is critical to secure mission advancement.

Regional Boy Scout councils developed a collaboration plan to leverage strengths and secure future operations. To do this, the process of collaboration enabled the Boards of Directors and senior professional leadership to broker an honest conversation of what is at risk.

DRC designed and facilitated work sessions to envision a future with shared ownership of the cultural, organizational, operational and financial challenges between both groups. These sessions provided a framework for achieving consensus needed to implement material changes to past practices.

Driving Down Costs to Deliver on Mission

Real Estate Ownership Strategies

This Massachusetts-based nonprofit serving low-income families needed a new strategic plan for the ownership and management of its real estate. The family-oriented apartments and shelter facilities were a financial drain on the organization and a distraction from the very strong social services offered to families and children in distress.

Real estate ownership and operations presented many challenges. Properties had been acquired over many years without a standard of what kind of properties contributed to the mission of the organization. DRC analyzed existing real estate assets in order to determine:

  • What kind of properties best contributed to the mission
  • Actual costs to operate each property
  • Optimal financing of property ownership and maintenance

DRC facilitated strategy sessions with the Board of Directors to set acquisition, financing and expansion target standards. Within the next twelve months, the organization double the number of available housing units.
